Question:

Has anyone read Cao Xueqin's "Story of the Stone"?

I own the first volume, and it looks very intimidating -- a ton of characters ... 18th Century China (almost totally foreign to me) ... perhaps a wandering plot ... I'm a little afraid to tackle it. Has anyone read it, and can you give me any suggestions?

Best Answer - Chosen by Asker: Well, it is, after all, over 3000 pages total..

I haven't read it, but own it as well. I am definitely going to read it one day, when I find the time. If you have time to devote to reading it, you should really give it a go, because I am sure it is worth it.

I don't think that China being foreign to you will be a problem.. It's like learning how to read.. The first time you read a word you don't know, you don't stop, you keep on reading until you encounter it another time, and again, etc, until it makes sense. If it still doesn't.. then you get a dictionary!
It'll be the same with 18th century China.. You'll read about the customs, won't understand a thing, and then you'll grasp the recurrent symbols. If you don't then you can always turn to a book about 18th century China!

If you feel like doing it, do it!! China is a fascinating country, and its 18th century is supposedly very refined. I am sure it will be a fascinating read!

Plus, you can always try and give up ;)
