Question:

Fairytales dont always have happy endings do they?

Best Answer - Chosen by Asker: I hope not. Happy endings just perpetuate the bourgeois myth that we live in the best of all possible worlds, that things might look ugly at times but really everything is okay. The fairy tales that American and French schoolchildren are used to, where our sympathies latch onto a princess and she has a problem and it's resolved and everything is fine at the end, is problematic, because there are no clear-cut answers, happy endings aren't a predictable outcome that happen on their own, and they ask us no real questions. WHY should we support the princess? Just as why SHOULD we support, say, our president or any other leader or rich person or celebrity? The German fairy tales are healthier. They scare you. It makes you ask what is just and what isn't.

I would like to see a book of Brechtian fairy tales composed one day.

Maybe I'll do that :-P
