Question:

Why was the original title of "Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone" changed?

to the american "harry potter and the sorcerer's stone"?

Best Answer - Chosen by Asker: The editor for the American edition didn't think the idea of the Philosopher's Stone would be as widely understood by American children so it was changed to Sorcerer. It was also thought that from a marketing point of view Philosopher possibly sounded too serious and that the title change would make it sound more "magical" and so in line with the world of Harry Potter. I think the editor got a ticking off in the end for being patronizing towards American kids.

PS. The film title is also different as is the dialogue in the film that refers to the stone.
