Question:

Sheet music for guitar?

My sister plays the piano so she can teach me to read the sheet music. The problem I am faced with is the fact that I don't know where the notes are at on the fret board! I don't really have anyone to teach me as I live in a rural area with few musicians. Could anyone tell me where I could find a diagram or something to show me the notes on a fret board?

Best Answer - Chosen by Asker: One suggestion is to purchase a beginning guitar note reading book. Try www.ronnylee.com and get volume one and may be 2 of the Learn to Play Step by Step series.

However here's quick lesson on where the notes are:

The guitar strings are numbered from the lowest string (the thinist string, closest to the floor), to the fattest string (closest to the ceiling). The string closest to the floor is the hightse in pitch and the string closest to the ceiling is lowest in pitch. When played open (without being fingered) the names of the strings from lowest to highest are E - A - D - G - B - E

The low E string should be tuned to the sound of the E note one octave below the E immediately below Middle C on the piano.

The A string is the sound of the 2nd A below Middle C
The D string is the sound of the first D note below Middle C
The G string is the sound of the first G below Middle C
The B string is the sound of the first B below Middle C
The high pitched E string is the sound of the first E above Middle C

Note that the guitar sounds an octive lower than the written note. Mention that to you sister and she will likely then be able to explain where the notes are on the guitar.

Now beginning students usually learn the notes within the first four or five frets of the finger board before venturing higher.

So here are the notes for the first 5 frets:
String ......... 6 . 5 . 4 . 3 . 2 . 1
Open String E . A D . G . B . E
1st Fret ...... F . Bb . Eb. Ab. C . F
2nd Fret...... F#. B . E . A . C#. F#
3rd Fret...... G . C . F . Bb . D . G
4th Fret ...... G#. C#. F#. B . D#.G#
5th Fret ...... A . D . G . C . E . A

Almost any song can be played using just these notes. However it usually takes about a year of practice before a student learns enough technique to be able to play songs well. Start with the simplest songs in a begining piano book or if your get the guitar book I suggested. And be patient, work very slowly.

Good Luck
