Historical naval career help.?

Hi. Im just starting to research my family tree and my mother is really really keen for me to find out as much as I can about her fathers Naval career. However, all the information I have on him is the name of the boat he served on, a broad idea of when he served and his DoB and full name, I dont have his 'personnel' number (or serial number). Does anyone know if there is any way I can find this information out? I dont mind paying for info as long as i know what i get should be accurite! can anyone help me please?? thank you
