Question:

In the book 1987 what is the purpose of the party?

Best Answer - Chosen by Asker: you mean 1984 :)

1984 is a dystopian novel written with the purpose of warning readers in the west of the dangers of totalitarian government.he had already written about the communist revolution in russia in "animal farm".

in 1984, orwell portrays the perfect totalitarian society, the most extreme realization imaginable of a modern-day government with absolute power, where "the party" monitors and controls every aspect of human life to the extent that even having a disloyal thought is against the law.

the party uses a number of techniques to control its citizens, each of which is an important theme of its own in the novel.

psychological manipulation.

there is a large t.v. screen in every room, where the government can watch every move you make.

it is the origin of the saying "big brother is watching you".

big brother is the leader of the government.

physical control

the party also controls the physical movement of the people. it forces its members to undergo mass morning-exercises called the "Physical Jerks", and then to work long, grueling days at government agencies, keeping people in a general state of exhaustion. anyone who rebels is punished and ??reeducated?? through systematic and brutal tortureby finding out what people are most afraid of and locking them in "room 101" with that fear. for winston smith it's rats, and after being locked in with them, he says that if the government tells you that 2+2=5, you would agree with them, rather than go into room 101 again.

control of the media and history.
the party controls every source of information, managing and rewriting the content of all newspapers and histories for its own ends. it doesn't allow people to keep records of their past, such as photographs or documents. the only history is what the party chooses, it controls the past as well as the present.

technology
the party installs t.v. screens and hidden microphones across the city, the party is able to monitor its members almost all of the time.

language.

the party uses "doublethink" to control the way people think.

therefore the party keeps absolute control over the people, allowing the authoritarian state to flourish.
