Question about count of monte cristo?

it's one of my summer reading books..and i dont understand why villefort was so shocked about the letter edmond had..like right before they sent him to the island to be imprisoned. what was so shocking..yeah, it was his father but whats the significance?

Best Answer - Chosen by Asker: The letter detailed how the people who supported Napoleon Bonaparte were going to get Napoleon to escape his prison on the Island of Elba. Villeforte, who had some power and position in the current government would have been possibly demoted and would lose power and position if anyone found out that his father was trying to overthrow the current government by helping Napoleon Bonaparte escape captivity. He had to keep it secret, and so he also had to silence Edmond though (Edmond couldn't read the letter, but given time might be able to hurt Villeforte's chances of political advancement). I hope this helps.
