Question:

How much responsibility does Futurism bear for the rise of Fascism?

Futurism, that modern art glorifying the speed of change in modern society, comprised two wings, Russian and Italian. For a time, Russian Futurism was enlisted in the support of the new artforms abundant in the aftermath of the Bolshevik Revolution, and as such received official sanction---for a time.

Italian Futurism, however, was a more dynamic beast, and actually prophesied the movement that would, in less than 20 years, take power in Italy and sweep its influence through many of the European governments of the 30's: Fascism.

The Futurist manifesto offers almost a blueprint for Fascism: destruction of past values and culture, a glorying of war and violence, an unlimited faith in the power of the strong to lead. The Futurists were patronized by Margherita Sarfatti, Mussolini's most influential mistress, and unofficial cultural arbitrator of early 20th century Italy. The patronage went both ways, and the Futurists were vocal supporters of Mussolini.

It is rare to find an art movement that actually influences politics: usually it is the other way around. It is undeniable, however, that Futurism did influence Italian politics, in favour of Fascism.

What do you think was the extent of this influence, and how do you think it serves as an example of the dangers of art and politics co-mingling?
