Not only did this discovery save millions of lives, but the publicity around it suddenly made medicine and medical research seem so glamorous and exciting and dramatic that it inspired a whole generation of young people to pursue careers in medicine, which in turn saved millions of lives more. It was one such person, born in 1912, who told me this many years ago, after he had retired from an active and illustrious medical career.
