mystery authors?

Question:

Good sci-fi / fantasy / mystery authors?

I want to try to get back into reading. I enjoyed reading mystery and sci-fi/fantasy books. Some authors I had enjoyed were Brian Jacques and R.A. Salvatore. Anyone have any suggestions?

PS The only sci-fi I'm not into is star wars and other outer space stuff

Very indepth character developement and plot schematics.
Very lengthy as well, with I think 11 books so far and each being between 700-1200 pages each.

The Sword of Truth series by Terry Goodkind
Again good character developement, a little perverse in some way, extremely melodramatic (which fantasy books aren't?), but I think this one gets over the top sometimes.
