How to become a stand-up comedian?

My friends and family told me that I should look into becoming a stand-up comdeian. They said that I would do a good job in that work. Just wondering on how to begin doing stand-up. Any suggestions?

Best Answer - Chosen by Asker: Whew! Thats a lot more work than people think it is.

The basics? Start writing out your jokes and practice them on people. Practice in a mirror. Get it down. Get a good three minutes worth of material together and then go to an Open Mic Night. Get on stage. Present your material. Bomb. Learn from your mistakes and then do it all over again.

It's a tough job!
