Question:

Quasi-military raiders who kidnapped young men to resell as soldiers?

Is there any sort of name for them? I had a civil war gguncle in Missouri who was 'grabbed' by such a group and taken to a camp in an isolated area along with many other young men. He stole a horse and got away, but no one in his town would shelter him for fear of reprisal. He made his way across the Mississippi and up to Peoria where a married sister helped him out. He never did wind up in the army.

Best Answer - Chosen by Asker: The War of 1812 was a result of British naval forces kidnapping American seamen and putting them on British ships. This was called "Impressment." The "Impressment Gangs" prowled the harbor dives and kidnapped sailors to complete a ships's crew needs. These gangs even stopped American merchant ships and took men while at sea.

I have heard of similar things happening amongst "Quantrill's Raiders" in Kansas and Missouri, but I don't recall having heard there was a specific name for it.
