Was M.K. Gandhi, the famous persoanlity of India a Jain?


Best Answer - Chosen by Asker: Gandhi was not a born Jain but his parents had faith in Jain monks. Before going to England for higher education in law, , he took oath of not eating meat their, from a Jain monk.

In England, some of his Christian friends were asking him to become Christian. Gandhi wrote a letter to Shrimad Rajchandra, a Jain ascetic, asking lot of questions about religion. The correspondence between them is very famous in Jains. Gandhi says in his autobiography that Rajchandra was one of the three most influeantal person in his life.

Gandhi was strong believer in Jain concept of Ahimsa, Truth, Celibacy and non-attachment. He used ahimsa as a weapon against British rule.

So one can say that Gandhi was a Jain.
