It doesn't hurt to learn how to sing, even if musical theater isn't your first choice, because you never know when a really good opportunity may arise that requires that you sing. Otherwise, check around your hometown and see if there are any acting classes you can take. There are several acting methods that actors use including Uta Hagen, Stanislavsky, Chekhov, and others. These techniques help you find tools that you can use to transform yourself into the character you are portraying. Audition for everything you can and get on stage as often as possible. Then you may want to consider going to college to major in theater. There are many colleges in the United States that offer acting as a major. That way you'll have a college degree (important if you ever want to teach or need a back-up job because now days almost everyone expects you to have a bachelor degree in something) and 4-5 years of solid training to prepare you for auditions. You would then most likely move to Chicago, New York, or L.A. and start auditioning for jobs.

There is not set path to success in this career, but those are few things to look into if you are really interested.
