Question:

Can anyone tell me what disaster happened in Scotland around 1851?

To leave quite a few orphans. Was there a famine or a plague.I have been researching genealogy, and have found a number of children that had been adopted or in various institutions in particular the Perthshire area.

Thank you all for telling me about the Nitshill disaster. I couldn't understand why one of my families babies was put in an orphanage, but now I know.

If anyone is researching this disaster area for March 1851, here is the list of the names of all the brave miners who died. Most of them were all married, some are listed here with their children who also died working that morning. Including my William Mc Millan and his son John who left an 8 month old baby son, and brother.
