Question:

What was the focus of the civil rights movement in the 50s and 60s and what major milestones were achieved?

Best Answer - Chosen by Asker: The civil rights movement was set off by the Emmitt Till murder of 1955. This was one the first times in history that the media actually covered a hate crime against a Afro-American with a sympathetic twist.

The Milestone that it acheived were astronomical.

1. The march unified many balcks and whites along racial lines in a mass movement.

2. The Movement gained attention and support from politicians and Washington.

3. Many bills were passed and laws changed to install basic rights for all American citzens and protect those rights as well.

4. Once the American public began to focus on civil rights as a major domestic issue, Malcolm X did something that many people both blacks and White competley overlook and have yet to truely give him his credit. He went before the U.N and charged the U.S with crimes against humanity, racism, segregation and aparthied. Only then, did the world began to look upon the U.S as a hypocrate thus provoking major changes.
