Best Answer - Chosen by Asker: You basically got it right! Think of each number (1,2,3,4) as a beat. A whole note is 4 beats, half is 2 beats, quarter is 1 beat.
Eight notes are half a beat - counted 1 and 2 and 3 and 4 and (the ands are the up beat - when tapping the foot, you play the note when the foot comes up)
Sixteenth notes are 1/4 a beat and counted 1 e and a 2 e and a 3 e and a 4 e and a. In other words, each time you tap your foot, you play four notes in rhythm. This sounds confusing, but tap your foot and say the different phrases - that will help you get the idea.
