Question:

Does anyone know any great broadway alto songs?

I'm going to audition for the fall musical at my school and I have a kinda low voice so any suggestions would be great! It can be light and funny or dramatic. Any input would be great! Thanks!

Best Answer - Chosen by Asker: It depends on the musical. Always try to sing something similar to the role you're auditioning for. So if you're auditioning for South Pacific, use a similar Rodgers and Hammerstein song from Oklahoma or Sound of Music. Also, as much as I love Wicked, there were some good musicals written before 1990, and chances are good that those might be the ones your high school is doing. High schools won't be doing Wicked, Phantom, Chess, Les Mis, or Miss Saigon anytime soon, but they are laiable to do Bye, Bye Birdie, You're a Good Man, Charlie Brown, Godspell, West Side Story, Grease, Oklahoma, Hello, Dolly!,etc.

Also there are books of nothing but alto songs in the correct key. Try to avoid changing keys, especially if it's intended for a male character. There are plenty of great songs for girls to choose from. Try "Nobody Does it Like Me from Seesaw, "All that Jazz" from Chicago, "You Can Always Count on Me" from City of Angels, or "Cabaret." Also Cole Porter and George Gershwin have some good alto songs.
