She was the woman that Hermione found in a book in the library when she was searching for people with the last name of Prince. Snape's father was a muggle. Therefore, he is from the bloodline of Princes, and only half of his blood/genes came from a wizard. Snape owned the book that Harry had been reading. Snape came up with the horrible spells, including the one that hangs you upside down, which was used on him by James Potter and his friends.
