How can you have love without hate?

Question:

How can you have love without hate?

Everything needs an opposite doesn't it. Or is the idea of hate enough to have love?

I'm trying to say that without a negative there can't be a positive. Love is a positive, so there needs to be a negative to it; hate. The word 'the' isn't a negative or a positive, so it doesn't nessicarly have an opposite.
