Question:

Can anyone tell me about Cold War . Did the atmostphere of the 50's justify American Paranoia?

Best Answer - Chosen by Asker: I think the paranoia was justified. The Soviet regime was every bit as expansionist as the Nazi regime. They tag-teamed with the Nazis to annex Poland. They invaded Finland. They took-over the Baltic States. They took-over all of the other Soviet Republics. They took Eastern Europe.

One of the major tenets of international socialism was constantly exporting communism. Lenin had set-up the Comintern for the express purpose of overthrowing bourgeois governments around the world. Communist espionage was exposed in many Western democracies: Kim Philby, Anthony Burgess, Don MacLean, Anthony Blunt, John Cairncross, Michael Straight, Alger Hiss, Whittaker Chambers, Julius Rosenburg, to name a few.

When the Cuba turned communist, Che Guevara started burning all books and lining up thousands in front of firing squads. Other brutal repressions in places like Hungary were pretty frightening.

The Commies were pretty honest about wanting to destroy Western concepts of the individual, individual rights, human rights and basically turning society into an ant colony.

Cap all of this off with the Soviets getting the atomic bomb.
