Question:

Persia v.s. Greece?

If you had a choice between living as either a slave or non-citizen freeman in either Persia or Greece which would you choose?

Best Answer - Chosen by Asker: I would have chosen Persia ... they were far more ethical in their treatment of conquered territories, and contrary to modern belief they were extremely tolerant of differing cultures -- it was the Greeks that had a problem with the Persians. They also had an extremely advanced agrarian complex ...

Also, Sparta was not the "bastion of freedom" Western culture has made it out to be. Spartan culture was based upon brutal and widespread slavery. As a further elucidation only about 5% of Spartan society was what we would consider "citizen' status today (i.e. right to own land, vote, military service, etc ...). Everyone else was one form of slave or another.

Also, for the second respondent ... Islam didn't even exist at the time of the Spartan 300 ... that was more than 1,000 years later. Its anachronistic and false to call Persians of that period Muslims ...
