Question:

Did you know that the country Turkey was once a huge empire and was more advanced then than it is now?

Best Answer - Chosen by Asker: The Ottoman Empire covered Turkey as well as much of the Middle East, the Balkans and other areas of Eastern Europe, and what is now Egypt. It reached its peak in the mid 19th Century but fell apart and was gone completely by the end of WWI

Where do you get the idea that it was more advanced then than now? Definitely not, by any stretch of the imagination.

It was the custom that when an Emperor died his oldest son immediately had all his brothers murdered so that he would not face any challenge to his rule.
It was an Islamic entity so women had no rights, slavery was pervasive and captives were often deliberately maimed so that they could not escape. The Ottomans were notorious for their cruelty even in an era when everyone was far more brutal than most modern cultures.

Even in the mid-19th century Turkey was referred to as "the sick man of Europe."

Kemal Ataturk who took power in 1922 brought Turkey into the modern age, secularizing society and permitting freedom of religion, emancipating women and abolishing slavery and instituting public education.
