Question:

Why do authors do this?

why do authors make their characters look up at the sky and describe what its like? is it so readers can visualize and use their imagination?

Best Answer - Chosen by Asker: I think it's partially to help you visualise the scene and the day. Thinking of a bright sunny day brings many images and associations to mind that are different from a cloudy day. The author can drop you into the scene very quickly that way.

Also, it tells you a bit about the character eg they are not wrapped up so much in their thoughts that they see nothing, they are observant and perhaps can pick up information visually, they like to experience their days to the full or they're judging whether they can make it to their destination without being rained on etc etc etc
