Question:

Why did Stalin exile Crimean Tatars from Crimea?

???

Best Answer - Chosen by Asker: The Soviet Union was a large multi-ethnic conglomerate of states from the old Russian Empire. While Russians were the controlling majority in the Soviet Union, the Russians encountered problems in bringing the other ethnic and religious minorities to adapt to communism, and therefore to accept Russian hegemony within the union.

One of the problems that the Russians faced in a large multi-ethnic empire was hatred of Russians, that had existed for generations due to the cruelty and oppression under the Tsars. When the bolsheviks came to power in 1918, the ethnic minorities did not see that there was simply a change of government - they saw 1918 as the key to their own independence and free from Russian control.

Of course, the Russians did not see it that way. During the 1930's, Stalin's attempts to bring these multi-ethnic regions under Russian control saw the introduction of collectivisation, in which all farms and private ownership would be brought under Soviet (and therefore Russian) control.

The crimean tartars would have been no exception - viewed as traditional enemies of Russia, the hatred between Russians and the Crimean tartars would have been extreme racism at its worse.

Many of Russia's large multi-ethnic groups are nomadic in nature, moving about within territories and regions. Collectivisation was aimed to force these groups to give up their nomadic lifestyle, and be tied to the land - where the Russians could break their religious and cultural beliefs and force them to adapt to communism.

The Russians often resorted to mass murder, forced deportations, mass starvation - the stories about the Kazaks, the Soviet deportations of the Chechens, mass murders and deportations in Latvia and Lithuania are incredible to read.

Stalin demonstrated absolute ruthlessness in breaking these groups morally and spirtually to force them to become Russian, even forcing them to learn Russian, destroying their culture, forbidding them to speak their language - it was true genocide.
