Best Answer - Chosen by Asker: China's economic power is heavily dependent on overseas markets, while China is also heavily dependent on resource rich countries such as Australia.

While China is anxious to secure Australia's support for its policy over Taiwan and its Australia's silence over Human Rights abuses in China, i think China is very realistic enough to realise that a military attack on Australia would be devastating on the Chinese economy.

Under the ANZUS alliance system, Australia has very strong defense ties with the United States, which provides a nuclear umbrella for Australia and the U.S allies in the Asia-Pacific region. That nuclear umbrella has been strengthened with Japan now playing a greater role in regional defence - sparked by the North Korea nuclear issue.

China realises that neither the United States - nor our Asia-pacific neighbours - would or could tolerate a change in the balance of power in the Asia-Pacific region. Any Chinese attempt to project its military power in the region would be met aggressively by the United States, New Zealand and the other major regional powers such as Japan.

Attacking Australia or any other area in the Asia-Pacific region would have alarm bells ringing and would cause anti-Chinese sentiment through the region. And China is aware of this potential for a nuclear war - especially if Japan goes down the road of nuclear re-armament.

There are alot of geo-political questions that China is aware of in using its military power.
