Question:

How can I Learn to come up with vocal harmonies to go with a guitar part?

I have a pretty good understanding of writing for guitar but how can I turn my lyrics into vocal harmonies?

Best Answer - Chosen by Asker: If you understand the space between notes (and their inversions) it's really pretty easy. Basic harmony moves in thirds and sixths. A sixth is nothing but an inverted third. Basic harmony rests on a fourth or a fifth. A fifth is an inverted fourth.

Example: Thirds and Sixths

Going up:
C / D / E - 1 / 2 / 3

Going Down:
C / B / A / G / F / E - 1 / 2 / 3 / 4 / 5 / 6

Both intervals end up with an E

Coincidently, if you put your fingers across two strings, you get a third or a fourth

If you put your fingers down on two strings with one string in between - you get a sixth!

Moving in thirds - moving tones

C/E D/F E/G F/A G/B A/C B/D C/E

Moving in sixths

E/C F/D G/E A/F G/E A/F B/G C/A D/B E/C

Fourths and fifths rest tones

4th - - - 5th
C - F F - C

5th - - - 4th
C - G G - C

Later on you can learn more sophisticated techniques, but this will get you started. Look for links on music theory, harmony, composition and arranging. Hope this helps
