Question:

Does anyone else think Eragon and Eldest are two of the finest works of fiction in existence?

If so please in excruciating detail describe why.

Best Answer - Chosen by Asker: I agree that fiction is in danger from self-publishing software. I also agree that Paolini is no Tolkien. But there are a few good scenes in Eragon and Eldest that might stimulate a young reader's imagination. Having said that, I do think that Paolini's work reflects his physical age, and appears to desanguinate and simplify certain complex issues which arise in the novels. Comparing these works to Hemingway and Tolstoy is not quite fair, since those gentlemen had much more life experience on which to draw for inspiration than our young writer. The most pertinent thing to realize is that young people, or anyone for that matter, who pick up the novels of Paolini, or J K Rowling, George R R Martin, Greg Bear --
or any other fiction writer-- those individuals are embarking on a journey through a writer's mind that will hopefully lead them toward other literature. My college English professor, when I told him deprecatingly about the kind of "novels" I favored (lots of the works by most of the aforementioned writers), reminded me that most college kids today do not enjoy reading any fiction, and will only do so by requirement. So, Shakespearean plots or Orwellian imagery, no. Inspiration to read further....sure. :)
