Anyone with education, who had travelled abroad, who was religious, a member of an ethnic minority, was an intellectual, and many other categories was suspect. Thousands of people were frightened into spying on their neighbors, friends and families. People were denounced to settle old scores, to steal their property or just to deflect suspicion from themselves. Twenty million people were murdered.
