Question about the count of monte cristo?

ok i'm pretty sure i have this figured out, but i'm not sure. this might sound stupid, but you know when the "priest" comes to town and he goes to see Caderousse & his sick wife & asks about all his old friends, he says Edward "died" while in prison. i know he really didn't die, but did i miss something or is this priest actually Edward Dantes? Because i know he says how no one will notice him b/c of how much he changed like right before it goes to this part.
