What is the best way to clean pointe shoes?

I asked my teacher this a long time ago and she taught us to wipe calamine lotion on it so it becomes pink again, but it looses the shine. Is it possible to wash with water or will water spoil the shoe?

if you are concerned with the smell take a dryer sheet and put them in the shoe overnight.
