In my opinion they based it off of Ed Gein & then said it really happend just for the effect.

Theres really no proof it happend. Plus, I only saw the remake but at the end they're showing crime scene footage, and they forgot to secure one area or something, and Leatherface gets them. In my opinion no cop is that ******* stupid, espescially not once they figured out what happend.
