Years ago I read a book about a load of kids travelling through space. Whats the name of the book?

The kids are on an asteroid converted into a spaceship of some sort. I think they were on the way to colonise another planet. It turns out that there were some stowaway adults on the asteroid who try to take over and for a while control things until the kids take control again. The main character was a female.
