Best Answer - Chosen by Asker: The battle of First Manassas was a massive victory for the south that weakened the north's morale significantly and put the south in control of the war.

The accidental death of Stonewall Jackson, who was shot accidentally by his own men left the South without its leader who had turned around the battle at Manassas.

At Gettysburg, the south almost had the union beat. Pickett attempted to use the strategy of a charge that had worked to perfection for the French against the Austrians a few years prior. Had he succeeded, Lincoln and Sewell would have likely been executed for their war crimes, with Hamlin running away and claiming no responsibility and the Senator Vallandigham whom he had deported to the Confederacy (for dissent) would have likely been elected as the new president of the north. The west probably would have seceded and the US would be 3 countries with small federal governments today instead of 1 country with a massive government. But Pickett's charge failed and that event cost the south the war.

To finish the war, Shermen started a massacre to the sea in which he committed numerous crimes with the intention of bringing the war to an end. The south eventually surrendered, but not before it was almost completely destroyed and over 600,000 Americans (a greater percentage of the American population than died in any other war in American history) were murdered in an unnecessary war of northern aggression.
