Question:

Writers - Anyone ever used an on-line critique group?

Is it helpful? Is it safe?

You always run the risk of having your work stolen or your idea copied when you post it for free over the Internet. It's a risk you have to decide for yourself if it's worth taking.

There are some small writing critique sites out there that are protected somewhat from the public by having their forums open to members only, but you have to remember that anyone can join.

You also need to make sure you read the website's FAQ and user agreement. There are some websites out there that state whatever you post on their site becomes their property and you agree to terminate your rights by posting your work there.

Writerswall.com is a very small critique site. It's run by a published author. She doesn't retain your copyright, and usually does critiquing herself along with several other people with varied experience. If you join, you have to join with an email address that is not provided by a free provider like Yahoo or MSN.

Always use caution when posting your work. However, the same could be said with sharing it for free inside a writing group that meets in person.

You also asked if it was helpful. That also depends upon you. How open is your mind to receiving honest feedback about your work? If all you want is a pat on the head telling you it's marvelous, then stick with friends and family. If you want people to tell you what works and what doesn't, what needs editing and what's good, then a critiquing group or site is for you and can prove to be very beneficial.

Good luck to you!
