Question:

How do I cackle like a villain?

I am playing the title role in the musical "The Wiz" this summer, and although my character is not the villain of the show, I must learn to do a villain-like cackle on stage. I've tried doing a very loud, projected laugh, but it doesn't come off as scary or intimidating. I'm open to anything, so any suggestions would be greatly appreciated - thanks!

Best Answer - Chosen by Asker: If a loud harsh cackle doesn't work for you, try a lower menacing one. You have to find something that is comfortable for your voice without making you hoarse in any way! It really should start with the attitude of your character. Is your character TRYING to scare people with his laugh? Or delighting in his own brilliance? The motivation of your character drives it. Also, The Wiz may be able to use a microphone or megaphone backstage for the parts in which he is hidden. If that is the case, you could be much more subtle in your choices.Things evolve in the rehearsal process, so it's sometimes best not to set things in stone too early.
