Question:

Should Christians have secular acting parts?

I am a Celebrity Tribute Artist as Whoopi Goldberg, and a devout Christian. I have a routine that is family friendly and feel very comfortable with it. Being that Whoopi is not a Christian, should I continue with my Tribute Artist business as Whoopi. Christian actors, what do you think?

Best Answer - Chosen by Asker: I am a Christian - a fundamental Southern Baptist. I am also a professional actor. Let me first say that my faith is very conservative. Having said that, here is my main point:

You are an ACTOR. It is ACTING. If you are truly committed to the craft and the art form, you are completely suspending reality. The character that your portray (Whoopi) is not a representation of who you are. You are using your talent and gift as a representation of her. If you commit to your character, your audience will too. Does your audience know that you are a Christian? If so, how is that evident. If Whoopi is not a Christian, then that's part of the analysis you must use in your character.

As a very conservative Christian, I find myself playing roles that are absolutely not a reflection of my character and my beliefs. But if I am portraying a character on stage that is homosexual, a drug addict, promiscious, or the antagonist, it doesn't reflect on who I am as a person. I am communicating the story of the show I am in to the audience. There isn't an ounce of "me" on stage....just my character.
