Best Answer - Chosen by Asker: Welcome to the wacky, fun-packed world of rejection.
Every writer suffers this malady when they have no agent or publisher connections.
My YA novel GAMEPLAYER: The Genesis Portal was a bear to find a publisher willing to handle it. This is even though I have two previously published non-fiction books to my credit. Little did I realize that my first publisher Focal press has no ties to fiction publishing.

I don't know the ins and outs of self-publishing except that it's not considered actually being published. The self-publishers that contacted me (like locusts as soon as I sent out some query letters) informed me that it would probably cost me about ten thousand dollars and that there was little chance of ever re-cooping it. So if you have scads of extra money laying around and your ego drives you to see your name on a book cover, check them out.
Otherwise just do the basic steps:
1) Go through Writer's Market and list all agents and publishers who handle your genre.
2) Send a query letter to each listing following their submission guidelines to the letter.
***go online to their site to get their up-to-date guidelines and the current person's name to address your query.***
3) Prepare to receive reams of rejection letters and don't take them personally. They're not.
4) Don't give up.
I read an article on Steven King that mentioned he was rejected so many times that he resorted to writing magazine articles to get published.
