Best Answer - Chosen by Asker: The Aswan dam, one of the world's largest, was completed on the Nile in 1973. The annual floods of the Nile, though sometimes destructive, were also the source of the rich soil that allowed for the flourishing agriculture of the Nile Valley. After the dam's completion, agriculture downstrea,mm became much less prodcutive. Deprived of the annual deposit of silt, areas downstream began to erode. The delta area eroded substantially and also began subsiding, leading to floods during high tides. The fishing industry in the Mediterranean for many miles around the delta was dramatically impacted, as the Nile was also the source of nutrients for the fish and other organisms. There are some large coastal lakes just inland which are the source of much of Egypt's fish. These are now in danger of being breached and contaminated with salt water, which will kill all of the fish. The soil of the delta has long been the raw material for the Egyptian brick industry, a livelihood for many Egyptian families. Loss of the annual sediment deposits has crippled this industry.
