Best Answer - Chosen by Asker: A modern-set book is Pants on Fire by Meg Cabot and it's actually pretty good--most of her books are, such as the already mentioned How To Be Popular and my personal favorite, Avalon High, about the King Arthur story retold in a modern high school.
My favorite author, though, is Tamora Pierce. She writes a wonderful teen fantasy series. Her first is the Alanna series, followed by the Immortals Quartet and Protector of the Small, but I love her Daughter of the Lioness series (Trickster's Choice, Trickster's Queen). They are my absolute favorite books ever.
