Sanding is desirable but difficult to do without damaging the surrounding area. You may be able to find an etching primer which can be applied more accurately. Airbrush is good, but you'll need to make up a stencil with friskfilm. You'll need a quality airbrush paint for the purpose.
An alternative would be to take your design to a place that makes vinyl signs, they can scan it in and cut a vinyl version of your design to stick onto your guitar. Shouldn't cost too much.
Well I really Dont Know But this question reminds me of India.Arie's beautiful Guitar ...
paint a woman that compliments the curves of the guitar
An airbrush would be my choice for your project.
if you have waxed your flat top you may want to use some wax and grease remover before painting your design.
If your guitar has clear which it probably does you may want to test your paint to make sure it will adhere. If it wants to roll or slip off the surface you will need to lightly water sand the area before the final paint job comes together. (just take the gloss off and be carefull not to sand through)
Use a good quality automotive type airbrush paint. It should have quick drying properties and it will be the most durable.
Hobby paint can work just as well but try to stay with acrylics
and plan on doing a little clear work to protect what you have accomplished. Hope this helps have fun and good luck
