I have answered this question so many times, I decided to dedicate a web site to answer this question. Here it is:

http://www.life-after-harry-potter.com

Included is a list of only the best sorcery fantasy books, grade reading level, a short review of each book along with a brief summary of adult content. There is also a "Reader's Choice" list of favorite books, and a list of heroine sorcery fantasy books.

Also these: http://www.interleaves.org/~rteeter/grto... . Lots of lists, but I especially like the Harvard Classics list - all the books that I should have read, but (mostly) never did.

I hope this helps.

I love the classics!
The Catcher In The Rye
The Old Man and the Sea
A Separate Peace
Any Shakespeare (he's one of my favourites)
Pride and Prejudice
Metamorphosis
Fahrenheit 451
...
just go to the classics section in a bookshop and pick up the first book you see : )
I know it is suggested reading for high schoolers BUT:
Moby Dick - the prose and imagery is amazing!
To Kill A Mockingbird - Just great!
Move To kill A Mockingbird to my first choice becuase after you read tht in 10 hours----you'll trust me for the month-long Moby Dick read.
I also agree with everything from "ekigeni or so" except I don't get into Shakespear so much.
anything by John Grishim. I love his books they are great. I also read a book titled Beach Music. I can't remember who wrote it but it is a really good book. It's kind of hard to get into but if you stay with it it is a great story.
The Once and Future King.
If you love Harry, you'll love this.
Look at the Limony Snickets series. They are pretty good. Another series you might enjoy is the Wizard of Oz books. There are at least 14 of them.
You also might enjoy the Maxiamum Overide series by James Patterson.
Eragon and The Elder by Christopher Peloni are good too.
Plus the classics mentioned by the first poster are all excellent books too. Plus " To Kill a Mockingbird"
Earth's Children series by Jean Auel

gives a new perspective on things... and how far we've come.

Hmmmmmm.... Well, there's the Sevenwaters trilogy series by Juliet Marillier, I don't know if it's quite Harry Potter style, but they're young, and there's magic there (although of a little more of a believable kind, don't take me wrong, I love Harry Potter also, but it's druid magic and spiritual stuff like that in Sevenwaters).
I especially loved the last book in the series the CHild of the Prophecy.
