Question:

What is a good analogy for....?

something that rises.

I want to complete this last part of my essay where I am talking about depression and anomie where people shouldn't really say we "fall" into depression or anomie, but rather we rise into these states of being, we rise above society because we refuse to think like conformists..blah blah blah...

so we rise like [insert your analogy/metaphor here please :) ]

You guys are good, how could I not think of these!?

Beejee, you're correct, it is a behavior of descending, but in my case I find it the opposite.

Jim I, we all have problems and need help, some of us more than others; but especially those who have trouble using correct grammar. ;)

Jim I, we all have problems and need help, some of us more than others; but especially those who have trouble using correct grammar. ;) a phoenix from the ashes of our dispair to re-form ourselves;
depression raises its ugly head like a hydra;
a staggering boxer refusing to concede;
like a geyser uncontrollable and powerful.

Good luck! Like bread under the light of a hopeful heat. so we rise like the dough in that old day old bakery in the backwoods of Vermont I don't see it as a positive thing, but there are those who claim that depression IS the norm and to be happy is an abnormal psychology.
Perhaps the growth of a flower would be an apt analogy? Including genetic mutations would make an interesting theory. seek help if your mind works that way you got a maybe problem So we rise like a hippo full of helium. Maybe I'm wrong but I think of depression and anomie as states one 'descends' into rather than rising. Or else I've missed your meaning. so we rise like a dark moon on a stormy night?
