Question:

Reading music??

I am really struggling in choir with reading music, an djust can't seem to get it for some reason. If anyone has tips or tricks, that'd be great. We are doing intervals (ear training) and also the basic music reading, like sharps and flats and majors and minors, how you know when what is what... I AM SO CONFUSED!!!

Best Answer - Chosen by Asker: The only advise I can give you at this point is to relax. It will come. It would require some serious one on one time to really teach you how to understand it, so this isn't really a good format. But, I can tell you that I had a hard time getting it when I first started and now I have been singing professionally for over 10 years. So, don't sweat it too much right now. You are immersing your self in it and it seems overwhelming. It will make sense eventually. The best way to learn sight reading, especially for a choir or chorus position is to sit down at the piano and and play your part. It really doesn't take much piano skill and reading music is NOT rocket science. If you know the keyboard and can minimally read music, play the part a number of times. Not only will you train your ear but you will also get a mental picture of the notes as they appear on the keyboard as you're singing thereby giving additional support beyond just you're ear.
