Question:

What is the role of art today?

Is it to challenge?

Best Answer - Chosen by Asker: The role of Art today is the same that it always was:
1.serve as a medium of expression for the Artist to convey his/her reactions to life and times around
2.To serve as means of earning one's daily bread in the beginning and earning the nest egg a little later and
3.To earn a fortune for your progeny ,if Luck favors you with fame during your life time itself.

As for Art 's role of challenging, I would disagree. Art is most powerful when it persuades subtly ,rather than when it expresses violently. Not that it doen't work. But it is the duration of the impact that makes the difference No. It simply spices up our lives from being dull. "Duration of the impact" and "persuades us" are good points, but too confining...

Art teaches us, conjoles us, belittles us, seduces us, befriends us, affronts us, calms us, inspires us, strokes us, slapes us... etc....

It lives with us. If it knows nothing else, it knows loyalty!
It does everything that life does, except leave us.
We leave it. Good art challenges us... some of it anyway.

I think that challenging art today might get written off as too "difficult" by some people... that means that they'll make fun of it and call it "art" in some sort of prissy voice and go home to their velvet Elvis paintings and whatever posters they've been told are cool enough to bother with...
