Question:

How can I break out of my creative box?

I know this kind of a silly question, believe me.

But I feel like I'm almost there, like I'm on the verge of being free from my ego when I am creating music and words. But I often find myself still being cliche or constrained or REstrained by my self. Many times I can not concentrate, I can't clear my mind of distractions. Does anyone have any helpful suggestions?

Best Answer - Chosen by Asker: For me--creativity breeds more creativity.

For example, if I go to a museum, a concert, read literature or poetry, listen to classical music--I always feel more inspired and creative. Even a quiet hike in the woods can do it.

Stop pressuring yourself and enjoy the process. Even laying all the "obligations" of creativity aside you can let it go for a while. Focus on something practical and down to earth. Clean up your artists room, reorganize it to face an open window or get better lighting. Even painting the walls a different color can psychologically give you a new feel for your work.

If you haven't done so--set aside a very special place for all your materials to create with. This can sometimes be the exact thing you need for a new focus.

If all else fails--get yourself a box cutter.

; ) Creativity happens when you least expect it... Try to expand your activities to the extreme. You will find creativity mulitiplies exponentially. Works every time! It sounds like you need a muse! You can't force yourself to be creative, otherwise it will seem contrived and formulaic--that's why so much popular music today sucks! When you have a muse (someone you love, a trip to a new city, somewhere/thing that brings back old memories, a fellow artist) you'll be inspired to create, and you just need to open yourself up to it. It's got to be organic...and don't get down on yourself if it doesn't happen right away, because that negativity will keep building. Good luck!
