Question:

Aaron Copland - "Simple Gifts" from Appalachian Spring, 1943. HELP!!!?

Please help me figure out about the instrumentation of this piece. I know it's a full orchestral music, but I don't know the arrangments of the instruments, like which one plays first. I need to know the overall form and texture. I'm not musically develpoed :D Therefore I have no idea about what instruments is playing at any time in the piece. Please help me if you have any idea about what I'm talking about, I'm desperate :(((

Best Answer - Chosen by Asker: I enjoy Copland's work, but, alas, haven't been listening for some time. I'm trying to recall from memory his rather "unique" sound. I do recall that he often lead with horns, and then came in with woodwinds? I don't recall the strings being in the forefront, or the percussion?

Also, i think he would tend to introduce the theme/melody almost immediately, and then "embellish" only later. Get a copy of the CD my dear and play it over and over as you read the "liner notes." That is what I did in a Music Appreciation class years ago, and I got an A in the class. The point of your teachers's question is to have you figure it out for yourself, and thus to learn something. Enjoy, and have fun. Aaron Copland is one of my favorite composers, and "Simple Gifts" to me is his top selection.
