This is my favorite verse from a poem by William Blake:

To see a world in a grain of sand
and a heaven in a wild flower
hold infinity in the palm of your hand
and eternity in an hour.

Also, this is a poem about Aragorn in the Lord of the rings, but it's a little more than just a character description to me:

All that is gold does not glitter
not all those who wander are lost
the old who is strong does not wither
deep roots are not reached by the frost
from the ashes a fire shall be woken
a light from the shadow shall spring
renewed shall be blade that was broken
the crown less again shall be king
