Question:

Michaels framing?

Do they originally have prices double of regular framers so they can run a 50% off sale? I brought an odd sized photo in to get custom framed, and was disspointed in their service and availability. Thinking Ill try an independent framer, but curious if Michaels is that much less.

I am a certified custom framer and did all my training at Michaels. The reason their prices are more expensive than, say Hobby Lobby, is because Michaels uses preservation mounting. Everything they do is guaranteed to ensure the life of the print held within. Everything is acid-free, and UV protectant. Although Michaels is expensive, in the long run you will only have to frame the image once and it will last. However, make sure you ask the framer you are working with lots of questions. Trust me, I worked their for 2 years and not every person who works in the frame shop should be allowed to touch your work. If you have any questions, feel free to email me I would love to help. Good luck!

Also, there is a way that Michael's runs their frame shop so that they always make a certain percentage of profit from their sales. Although they may try to charge you full price, don't let them. They will almost always give you 50% off even if the sale is not running. Otherwise just wait for a sale, they are always going on. Its not that Michael's gauges prices, it is more that they can afford to sell under cost. I hope that makes sense. Its hard to explain because of the purchasing set up.
