Question:

In "The Rime of the Ancient Mariner" by coleridge, what does the albatross symbolize?

The albatross symbolizes 3 things apparently and I need them all. Thank you in advance for all your help.

In the poem, the ancient mariner shoots the albatross which is considered to be a 'bird of good omen' and is later avenged for its death. He is haunted by spirits and has to endure a horrible penance. It seems to represent for me, Christ-like elements and the entire poem symbolizes Christian atonement. Finally, the mariner learns love for all "things great and small; for the dear God who loveth us, He made and loveth all." Reverence and belief in all the 'invisible things in the universe' is highlighted throughout the poem.
